The Vanguards
The Vanguards are a five-piece traditional bluegrass band based in London. They take their musical inspiration from the originators of bluegrass music. Instrumentally, they seek to create a sound which blends the mandolin style of Bill Monroe, the banjo style of Ralph Stanley and the old-time style of fiddling which was a feature of early bluegrass recordings. Vocally, they are heavily influenced by the Stanley Brothers and the duet and trio harmonies of Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys. Their repertoire reflects these musical influences. Their performances regularly include the traditional bluegrass songs and instrumentals made popular by the first-generation of bluegrass musicians. They combined these with a number of more modern compositions which are in the spirit of the pioneers of bluegrass music. They also enjoy introducing audiences to obscure, rarely-heard traditional bluegrass songs and tunes.
