Word In Your Ear Explores |

Two great authors and story-tellers are coming on Monday July 22 for a splendid double-bill.

You’ll know Will Birch as the former drummer of the Kursaal Flyers who wrote No Sleep ‘Til Canvey Island and a nourishing biography of Ian Dury. He’s just finished Cruel To Be Kind: the Life & Music of Nick Lowe which is suitably compelling and full of mischief, Nick barrelling through Brinsley Schwarz and Rockpile to become – inarguable fact! – the nation’s best and most enduring songwriter. There’s a strong support cast – Costello, the Damned, Johnny Cash and Carlene Carter among them. And yes, Keith Richards at the Bottom Line.

Peter Doggett’s been on before, talking about You Never Give Me Your Money, his account of the Beatles’ break-up. His fascinating new book is about the turbulent lives and fanciful times of Crosby Stills Nash & Young and makes you pale with envy that you weren’t hanging around Cass Elliot’s swimming-pool in Laurel Canyon in 1968. Astonishing stuff. You wonder how Crosby’s still alive.
