Word In Your Ear Presents |

Divine songwriter, sublime story-teller and effortlessly entertaining delight, Neil Innes is our guest on Tuesday May 1. He co-founded the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band – who appeared in Magical Mystery Tour – and contributed to Do Not Adjust Your Set and various Monty Python albums, sketches and stageshows. His deathless song catalogue includes What Noise Annoys A Noisy Oyster and the Lennon pastiche Cheese And Onions.

Co-workers in the sphere of satirical showbiz have included David Jason, George Harrison, and Phill Jupitus and Ade Edmondson (current fellow members of the Idiot Bastard Band), and he’s celebrating the 40th anniversary of the magnificent Rutles with a UK tour in mid-May. Neil will be ruminating upon his eventful “unplanned” career and it’ll be a lot of fun.

The evening starts with Garth Cartwright looking back at the UK’s best-loved record shops and the people who used to frequent them (a drunk Bob Dylan at Dobell’s, Kubrick filming A Clockwork Orange in the Chelsea Drugstore). It’s all lovingly recorded – “from wax cylinders to dubstep” – in his just-published Going For A Song.
