On February 17th we’re delighted to be able to present a very special evening devoted to Rock’s Great Lives. On that evening we’ll be joined by Andy Miller and John Mitchinson of the celebrated Backlisted podcast (https://www.backlisted.fm/), which, as it says on their tin, “breathes new life into old books”.
John is the publisher of Unbound and Andy is the author of “The Year Of Reading Dangerously” and between them they’ve probably read every single rock biography worth reading. Mark and David were Backlisted’s guests at the Port Eliot Festival this summer and on February 17th they’ll be returning the compliment by inviting Andy and John to pick what they consider the essential rock and roll biographies and to come along armed to enthuse the rest of us about them. This promises to be one of the funniest and most story-packed evenings we’ve ever hosted at Word In Your Ear. If you want a taste listen to David and Mark’s previous meeting with John and Andy at the Port Eliot Festival here. https://www.backlisted.fm/episodes/99-books-about-the-beatles
As if that wasn’t enough on that same evening we’re also joined by the much acclaimed Bethan Roberts, whose novel “Graceland” maps out an exciting new route for examining the lives of rock stars. It’s a gripping, immensely readable account of the early life of Elvis Presley and the relationship with his mother from which he never recovered. As novelist Jake Arnott said it’s “an astonishing literary achievement. Bethan Roberts somehow manages to unlock the mystery to that beautiful sadness in the voice of Elvis.”
